8 Megapixel in the mobile handset community is the new 5 Megapixel. In fact this too is soon going to be upped further to 12 megapixels and who knows how much higher the count's going to get. Those camera buffs who are looking for a complete mobile device that not only offers the basics and extra functions of a mobile handset viz. calls, messages, connectivity etc. and a digicam as part and parcel for the deal should find this list quite helpful.
Just for the record though, for those who don't know, the higher the pixel count only implies that the image size will be larger i.e. you'll be able to print larger images if necessary. It in no way translates to the quality of images being better than a handset that has a camera with a lower pixel count.
So without further ado, here's my list of the top 8 megapixel camera phones that are available on the shelves.
Sony Ericsson W995 – Rs. 26, 399 (MOP)
This slick slider from Sony Ericsson's very popular multimedia Walkman series is a feature rich handset with more than just a high end mobile phone camera on board. With the latest Walkman music player and the option for using your own earphones via a 3.5mm audio out port, the handset is quite appealing and well designed. It even has a prop up stand at the rear for comfortable video watching and comes bundled with an 8GB M2 card as well as a portable Speaker
attachment. It also offers Wi-Fi and Stereo Bluetooth connectivity with GPS (WayFinder and Google Maps Apps preloaded) and Geo-Tagging.

The 8 megapixel camera comes with features that include -
LED Flash, Geotagging, Face and Smile Detection, Image Stabilization, an Image editor and Picture blogging applications, Panorama, BestPic (continuous/Burst Mode), Timer and Scene Modes.
Samsung Pixon M8800 - Rs. 25, 079 (MOP)
The Pixon with its large 3.2-inch touchscreen makes for easy viewing while using the camera. The rear of the handset has a look and feel of any average digicam strengthening its appeal. The handset is quite feature rich and except for the lack of Wi-Fi. The camera comes with face tagging that functions like Facebook's own for identifying individuals in a group or individually. You can use Google Maps for the GPS. Samsung's TouchWiz UI with its widget system works remarkably well with this handset
And the music player comes with a 5.1 Surround Sound option coupled with Samsung's DNSe sound engine. The best part is it supports DivX and XviD video playback.

Samsung's 8 megapixel mobile shooter comes with a host of very useful features that include –
An LED flash, Geo-tagging, Face, smile and even Blink detection, Image Stabilization, Wide Dynamic Range (WDR), Auto Stitch Panorama mode (four directions), face Tagging, White Balance and Scene modes.
Nokia N86 - Rs. 26, 259 (MOP)
Nokia's N-Series has always been quite a loaded set of handsets from their multimedia segment. The N86 is no exception and is, so far, Nokia's first and only 8MP camera phone. The handset is well equipped of course for media as well as connectivity. The design is also well crafted and thought out with a similar prop stand like the W995's. With Bluetooth (A2DP), Wi-Fi, 3G, GPS and 8GB of user memory, the N86 covers all bases. It also comes with an FM radio with an FM Transmitter and internet radio as well. Let's not forget that since it's an N-Series device Nokia has its N-Gage application on board as well for the mobile gamers.

The camera has a lot to offer. Some of the features include -
Dual LEDs for the flash, geo-tagging, plenty of scene modes, White Balance, ISO settings, a timer, auto-stitch Panorama mode, exposure, contrast and brightness control.
Samsung Ultra Touch – Rs. 24,639 (MOP)
Samsung's Ultra Touch S8300 is a super sleek slider with a 2.8-inch touchscreen and alphanumeric keypad. The AMOLED display gives vibrant colors to the TouchWiz UI with its widgets system. Aside from the LG Viewty Smart, at 12mm in depth the Ultra Touch is one of the sleekest and slimmest 8MP phones around. It lacks Wi-Fi capabilities but is otherwise well equipped with connectivity from Bluetooth 2.1, GPS and 3G. Like the Pixon and other Samsung handsets DivX and XviD video playback is supported as well. Samsung's DNSe sound engine with a 5.1 Surround sound setting are also part of the handset's media makeup.

The Camera features -
An LED flash, Geotagging, Face and smile Blink detection, Image Stabilization, Wide Dynamic Range (WDR), Auto Stitch Panorama mode, face Tagging, White Balance and Scene modes.
LG Viewty Smart GC900 - Rs. 27, 500 (MOP)
LG has refurbished their popular Viewty camera phone model and given it a lot of 'Snap' from its design to LG's funky new S-Class 3D UI that supports multi-touch like the iPhone and the LG Arena. The display itself supports a high resolution of 480 x 800 pixels. It's equipped with 1.5GB of internal memory and comes with support for external memory via microSD cards. Connectivity includes Wi-Fi, 3G support, Bluetooth v2.1 and GPS with A-GPS support via Google Maps. LG has always managed to include plenty of codecs for video playback like DivX and XviD.

The on-board camera has Schneider-Kreuznach optics and comes with plenty of goodies that include -
an LED flash, geo-tagging, intelligent shot, beauty shot, image stabilization, Smile and multi face detection of up to 3 different faces at once, ISO settings.
These are some of the top mobile handsets that come equipped with 8 megapixel cameras
. Of course these are not the only ones that made it here, the two others out there are Sony Ericsson's C905 and Samsung's first, the INNOV8, if they're still available and you're lucky enough to get a piece. Samsung has also added another model to their list and just launched what they claim will be the very last word in mobile multimedia the Samsung i8910 Omnia HD
